James McHugh, Ph.D.
I am a licensed psychologist practicing at Clinical Associates in Lenexa Kansas. I have been a psychologist now for over forty years, and I have practiced in the Kansas City area for most of that time. I am now semi-retired from full-time practice and see patients only one day per week. I focus on treating depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and certain other emotional and behavioral problems. I also see couples for relationship counseling. My approach is mainly cognitive behavioral, but I try to tailor my approach to what is most comfortable and effective for each patient. People typically seek therapy because they are experiencing some type of emotional or personal problem. Often these problems are rooted in assumptions or cognitions about oneself, other people, or certain situations or events. Often these cognitions are subtle and perhaps not even fully conscious. In working with individual patients, and sometimes with couples, I work on identifying these cognitions and assumptions and exploring more helpful alternatives. Often changing habitual ways of behaving or interacting with others is also a focus. I want to thank all the patients I have seen over the years for the trust they have placed in me. I feel privileged to have been a small part of the lives of so many.
